EXCLUSIVE: Amir Khan has opened up about who would’ve emerged victorious if Floyd Mayweather and Terence Crawford had set foot inside the ring together.
It’s been a massive week for the Brit, with his good friend and former opponent, ‘Bud’, retiring from boxing. And it’s not over yet, with his promotion set to stage Lawrence Okolie vs Ebenezer Tetteh later tonight.
Amir Khan says Terence Crawford would’ve defeated Floyd Mayweather
Floyd Mayweather is undoubtedly a sensational competitor, with ‘Money’ mesmerising fans with his phenomenal defense and boxing IQ. However, having shared the squared circle with Terence Crawford inside the gym, and indeed on fight night, Amir Khan believes the Omaha switch-hitter would’ve had the edge over the 50-0 superstar.
WOW: ‘Oleksandr Usyk has given me an opportunity’… Deontay Wilder provides huge fight update
In an exclusive interview with Sporf, the former world champion explained: “We had great sparring sessions. The guy was one of the best in the world. He’s someone who didn’t get the recognition for how good of a fighter he really was; people only recognised what he was doing late in his career. I think he’s had one of the best careers ever. People ask me the question: ‘Would he have beaten Floyd Mayweather’? Yes.
“He is someone we will remember. He beat anyone and everyone. What a lovely guy he was outside the ring. I shared training camps with him. He’s hospitable, caring, loving, a family man and a good father. He’s someone who inspired me to be a great fighter and a respectful person as well.”
Amir Khan wants to make Lawrence Okolie vs Dillian Whyte
Tonight, ‘Chaos in the Ring’ hits Nigeria, with Okolie taking on Tetteh, who famously wobbled Dillian Whyte, in a thrilling contest.
Khan, who’s promoting the event, is excited for the headline attraction, believing it beautifully sets up a major showdown between two of the biggest names in Britain.
He beamed: “We tried to make the fight between Whyte and Okolie. I think that’s still a fantastic contest that could happen in the future. Let’s see how Okolie deals with a former Whyte opponent. Let’s see who gets the better finish. There’s a lot of pressure on Okolie going into this fight because he knows his rival beat Tetteh. I think that fight has to be made. It’s a mega fight in Britain. They want to fight each other. Dillian still has it in him.”
