Bizarre VAR red card incident in Juventus vs Galatasaray game branded a ‘disgrace’

Lloyd Kelly has just been sent off in a bizarre turn of events during the second leg of Juventus’ Champions League play-off against Galatasaray.

After making a mistake that cost his side against the Turkish giants last week, the Englishman was hoping for a big performance going into tonight’s game. Alas, it wasn’t to be.

Lloyd Kelly given a red card after strange VAR incident

Juventus came out with a point to prove against Galatasaray this evening, scoring in the 37th minute to give themselves a glimmer of hope that securing a place in the last 16 could still be possible.

However, after half-time, that dream dwindled when Lloyd Kelly received a second yellow card, resulting in his dismissal.

In a strange turn of events, Barış Alper Yılmaz and the Brit both leapt into the air, with the Juventus star catching his rival’s leg and foot with his boot.

Bizarrely, despite his match already being over, VAR was consulted with the official Joao Pinheiro, checking the monitor and upgrading the second yellow to a straight red.

VAR can be used to upgrade punishments based on the seriousness of the offence. There are different sanctions even if the immediate result is the same.

Regardless, fans have hit the roof, with several taking to social media to vent their frustrations.

One said: “Lloyd Kelly, red card. That’s a disgrace. What the f*** have they done to the game we loved?” Another added: “Lloyd Kelly’s sending off is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen on a football field, as is the subsequent VAR b******* thereafter. Crazy.”

Bizarrely, though, the controversial moment hasn’t dampened Juventus’ spirits, with the Serie A side scoring two more goals, to draw level 5-5 on aggregate, sending the game to extra time.
