After Man United’s 4-0 defeat against Brentford, a video has emerged showing Cristiano Ronaldo neglecting to give Erik ten Hag a handshake – and it is claimed he ignored a direct instruction to approach the away fans.
In 2009, the Portuguese superstar reluctantly exited Old Trafford to pursue his dreams at Real Madrid. But having achieved great success at the club, he never entirely closed the door on a return. And last season, that’s exactly what he did. However, despite 18 league goals last term, his United comeback hasn’t worked out exactly how he’d have liked.
His formerly great club have spiralled down the footballing mountain, and as of right now, it doesn’t look like they have a return flight.
The Portuguese international has made no secret of his desire to leave the club. But so far, he’s failed to break free. And following United’s horrific loss on Saturday, he couldn’t hide his frustrations.
Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t shake Erik Ten Hag hand in the immediate aftermath of Brentford loss
Just a few months ago, Ten Hag proudly lifted the Eredivisie title for the third time. But flash forward to August, and things are much more challenging for the Dutchman. Following his side’s humiliating loss, he demanded that the squad hold themselves accountable for the result.
He told Sky Sports: “They are good players, and have to take responsibility on the pitch, as a team and as individuals, and that’s what we didn’t do. I asked them to play with belief and take responsibility for their performance, and that’s what they didn’t do.
“It’s only when we stick together and work hard that we will overcome that. You have to take belief onto the pitch for yourself and the team.
“Don’t get me wrong, the manager is responsible as well, he has the main responsibility, and I take that. And I will work on that. I have to give them belief, but they have to give it by themselves.”
Ronaldo, renowned for his determination, appeared furious with the result and performance. Following the full-time whistle, footage showed him walking straight past his boss, and down the tunnel.
In addition, according to The Mirror, the forward declined Steve McClaren’s request to clap the fans who’d made the long journey down south to support their team. It is unclear what was said in the dressing room after the match – but the on-field footage doesn’t make for great viewing.
