Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez had the perfect response to an attempted troll from the Brazil Olympic squad.
The Argentina Olympic side failed to get out of the group stages at Tokyo 2020, drawing 1-1 with Spain in their must-win final group match.
Watched on by Lionel Messi, they went behind after Mikel Merino opened the scoring for the Spanish, before Tomas Belmonte equalised with three minutes to go.
Had Argentina scored again, they would have knocked their opponents out, but Spain were able to hold firm.
The tournament ended in disappointment for Fernando Batista’s side, and Brazil were quick to let them know about it.
Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, who is part of the Brazil squad at Tokyo 2020, posted a picture of himself and several team-mates waving to the camera.
He tagged the post with the words ‘bye little brothers’ in a clear reference to the Argentinian side.
Martinez quickly bites back
However, Luiz’s Villa team-mate Martinez quickly fired back.
The 28-year-old saved two spot kicks in the Copa America semi-final penalty shootout as Argentina beat Colombia to progress.
They then defeated Brazil in the final to lift the trophy.
And Martinez posted an image of him holding up the trophy during the Argentinian celebrations, tagged with ‘bye little brothers’.
The Brazil Olympic side are currently unbeaten in Tokyo thus far, and sealed their progression to the quarter-finals with a 3-1 victory over Saudi Arabia.
In their first match – a 4-2 win over Germany – Everton forward Richarlison became the first Premier League player ever to score a hat-trick at an Olympic Games.
He followed that up with another two goals in the Saudi Arabia match. That means he currently leads the overall scoring charts with five.
Brazil are next in action against Egypt – whose four points in the group stage saw them go through at the expense of Argentina – in the quarter-finals.
