The Champions League dream could be over for Bodø/Glimt. And the fans aren’t happy.
Last week, the Norwegian underdogs produced a truly remarkable performance, defeating the Portuguese giants 3-0, to almost certainly book a place in the quarter-final of the biggest tournament in club football. Alas, this evening the supporters have gone from being in a state of bliss, to throwing their remote controls at their television screens.
Why did Sporting Lisbon get a penalty against Bodø/Glimt?
Throughout this year’s Champions League campaign, Bodø/Glimt have captured the hearts of football enthusiasts around the globe.
In remarkable displays, the underdogs have claimed victories over Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, and Inter Milan. And it seemed after such an impressive first leg against Sporting Lisbon, like they were going to do it again.
However, when Gonçalo Inácio and Pedro Gonçalves hit the back of the net, the noose certainly tightened. But in a cruel moment, the Eliteserien side were on the bad end of a seemingly bad call that left fans fuming.
The ball was struck towards Fredrik André Bjørkan, deflecting off his chest and into his hand.
The referee gave the penalty, which Luis Suárez calmy converted.
Not happy with the decision, fuming social media users headed to X to vent their frustrations.
One said: “That’s never a penalty,” while another added: “Hits his chest and then his arm. Ridiculous penalty decision.”
A third wrote: “Ridiculous penalty call, man.” While a fourth raged: “The game is gone.”
With the match all square after 90 minutes, we headed to extra time, where Maximiliano Araújo quickly scored to likely bag his team a place in the last eight.
