Old footage has hit the Twitter sphere once again of MMA fighter Jonno Mears winning a fight with an old school pro wrestling move.
The sport of mixed martial arts is certainly a fascinating one with new techniques, submissions and practices being introduced every single day. In many ways MMA is still very much in its infancy with the UFC currently serving as the pinnacle of fighting excellence on the world stage.
It’s good to be different
Alas, from time to time it’s not particularly unusual to see some strange occurrences out on the region scene with rising prospects throwing everything but the kitchen sink at their opponent in an attempt to get their hand raised.
One such example of that came almost four years ago in September 2017 up in Bolton. On that night Jonno Mears, who currently holds a 5-2 professional mixed martial arts record, secured victory against Aaron Jones with just 90 seconds gone in the first round.
Mears was able to submit Jones in one of the most unique ways imaginable as fans across the globe recognised the submission from WWE’s squared circle.
It was, of course, the famous Boston Crab – not to be confused with The Walls of Jericho.
It’s almost unthinkable to imagine someone finding themselves in a spot like this inside of an MMA cage but unfortunately, that’s what happened to Jones, and we wouldn’t be surprised if that wound up being one of the defining moments of his entire career.
Perhaps if CM Punk had this kind of approach things would’ve gone a bit better for him in the UFC.
