Despite missing out on signing Frenkie de Jong in the summer, Manchester United have remained determined to get their hands on the Dutchman. However, his latest comments are enough to demoralise even the most optimistic of fan.
With an exquisite eye for a pass and an incredible footballing IQ, it’s not hard to understand why Erik ten Hag wants the Barcelona man in the centre of his midfield. But to his dismay, it appears that the player is extremely happy at the Nou Camp.
Back in July, United agreed an €85million deal with the Spanish giants. However, despite Xavi’s desperation to throw the 25-year-old overboard, he clung on for dear life. And in an incredible turn of events, it looks like he’s not only survived, but climbed back onboard and somehow taken control of the ship.
This season, De Jong has featured in a resurgent Barcelona side, who look almost guaranteed to win their first La Liga title since 2018. And on Sunday night, they boosted their chances with a massive victory over rivals, Real Madrid.
Subsequently, the rising star entered his post-match interview in an exuberant manner and shot down a trip to Old Trafford.
Frenkie de Jong is not coming to Manchester United
When asked whether he’d consider a stint at The Theatre of Dreams, the playmaker replied: “No, I don’t think so. You never know, of course. But I’m very happy in Barcelona.”
The news will undoubtedly come as a blow to United fans. But they’ll likely seek some comfort in the fact that their club is once again becoming a desirable destination for the world’s best players.
With a League Cup already under their belt this season, who knows what Ten Hag’s men will achieve next?
