Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has taken an amusing shot at Donny van de Beek’s body transformation.
Ever since arriving at Old Trafford from Ajax, van de Beek hasn’t quite been able to capture the hearts of United fans across the globe. It’s clearly been a tough transition period for him in the switch over to English football but there’s always been a hope that things would click into place sooner rather than later.
The captain comes calling
Over the last couple of months, there’s been an obvious change in his physical condition with VDB looking notably more muscular – as seen in the Red Devils’ pre-season outings.
After their 2-2 draw against Brentford last Wednesday, in which Donny played the role of captain, the man who usually wears the armband decided to have some fun with the Dutchman on social media.
“Don’t stretch that armband @donnyvdbeek”
There’s nobody within that Manchester United first team who wants van de Beek to succeed more than Maguire who, as we know, puts his body on the line every single time he lines up for the club. He earned the right to be called captain and if Donny can turn his fortunes around and bring stability to Solskjaer’s men in the middle of the park, they could be off to the races in a potential push for the title.
That’s going to be easier said than done considering just how stacked it’s looking at the top of the pile but we won’t truly know how much of a change has been made until the season gets underway. Maguire is coming off the back of a successful summer at the Euros, and with van de Beek having his eyes on the prize of a place in the starting XI, a bit of light-hearted Instagram humour feels like a good sign.
