Hugo Ekitike slammed by fans for huge Champions League miss… ‘Please tell me this is a prank’

Hugo Ekitike has received backlash from fans for a failed attempt at goal during Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Galatasaray.

In front of a raucous 50,651 fans at the Rams Park in Istanbul, Turkey, the Frenchman fell foul to the pressure, failing to convert an effort that would’ve drawn his team level.

Just seven minutes into the fixture, the home side took the lead after Victor Osimhen headed the ball towards Mario Lemina, who pounced to send the crowd into raptures.

Subsequently, Liverpool fought back but struggled to find a way to hit the back of the Galatasaray net.

In the 65th minute, with ‘The Reds’ desperately searching for an equaliser, Hugo Etitike broke away from the Süper Lig leaders’ defense, and started storming towards Uğurcan Çakır.

Alas, despite bursting into the box, and seemingly positioning himself in the perfect position to score, he failed to capitalise, leaving Liverpool supporters heartbroken.

Subsequently, viewers took to social media to voice their opinions.

One said: “I’m speechless. Genuinely, what happened to Hugo Ekitike? What happened to his finishing? It’s been woeful in previous weeks.”

While another begged the player to tell reach out to him, saying: “Please tell me this is a prank.”

Referencing the advertisement behind the net, a third football enthusiast joked: “Despite being told to ‘Just Eat’, Hugo Ekitike decided he wasn’t hungry.”

Liverpool later put the ball past Çakır, but the goal was disallowed when VAR recognised a handball from Ibrahima Konate.

The Premier League giants will now have it all to do when they host Galatasaray at Anfield in the second leg of the round of 16 on March 18.
