Tyson Fury lost to David Price in an epic grudge match

While most fighters wait until they turn professional to begin trash-talking, Tyson Fury started early, launching a tirade of verbal bombs in the direction of David Price, even going as far as to write a letter to the Boxing News about his plans to decimate his countryman.

The feud quickly escalated with the pair going head-to-head in an eagerly-anticipated showdown.

In an exclusive interview with Sporf via 247Bet, Price reminisced: “Tyson Fury came out of nowhere. He turned up at the England training camp at 18, and I’d just won the Commonwealth Games gold medal. The lads who were in the team with me said, ‘This young lad has turned up, and he says he’s going to take your place in the Olympics’. That was unheard of in the amateurs—we were all on the same team together—it was respectful.

“We did a little bit of tech sparring, and I think after that, he went to the World Junior Championships and won a medal. Following that, he was going to the ABAs, and he wrote a letter to the Boxing News. I remember, I hadn’t bought it, but I went to watch a boxing show on the Saturday night, and I saw Tyson and John Fury, and they were a bit weird.

“After the show, someone said, ‘Have you seen that letter he wrote to the Boxing News’? I was like, ‘No’. I went to a nightclub after the show because the ABAs weren’t for a couple of months, so we thought we’d have a night out, and when someone told me, I just went, ‘Right, I’m going home, and I’m getting in the gym tomorrow, the training starts now’. It triggered me.

“We had the fight in the Wythenshawe Forum on a Friday night. Usually, they put the super heavyweights on last, but because there was so much anticipation, and they thought there’d be trouble, there was police there, it was mad, you’ve never seen anything like it at an amateur show, it was packed, so they put our fight on early, so people wouldn’t be drunk.

“I got in the ring, started fast, it was a good fight, and I won, deservedly so. I humbled him in that fight, briefly. Then, I went on to the Olympics and won a medal. I probably didn’t acknowledge how good he was at the time because I didn’t want to. When I saw the video a couple of years ago, I was like, ‘He was actually good for that age group and level’. But I still didn’t foresee him going on to do what he did — no chance.”

David Price knocked a future world champion out cold

Fury is undoubtedly one of Price’s best victories.

However, his fellow Brit isn’t the only big name he has on his amateur record.

In a statement display, Price annihilated one of boxing’s toughest fighters.
