Italy unveils sublime 125th-anniversary kit for upcoming Nations League Finals

Adidas and Italy have combined once again to produce an absolute belter of a kit to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Italian football.

Throughout their footballing history, Italy have enjoyed near-unparalleled success both in Europe and globally. The national team played its first-ever game in 1910, where they achieved a 6-2 win over France.

From this point, the Azzurri emerged as one of the forces of international football.

Italy managed to win two World Cups before WW2, claiming the trophy in both 1934 and 1938. Between this, they also won the gold medal in football at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

However, the Azzurri had to wait 30 years before enjoying success once more. This time, Italy took home their first European Championship in 1968 – adding the other major international trophy to their collection.

The Italian national team finally won their first post-war World Cup when they emerged triumphant at Spain ’82. Here, Paolo Rossi cemented his place in World Cup history with a golden boot tournament, including a hat-trick against Brazil.

Now, in the 21st Century, Italy claimed their fourth World Cup at the 2006 tournament in Berlin. Most recently, they added the EURO 2020 title to their 1968 success, too.

With a proud and impressive history, it is unsurprising that the FIGC wishes to celebrate the milestone of 125 years of Italian football. Specifically, they are referring to the founding of the Italian Football Federation. This was created in Turin in 1898 – 125 years ago.

And what a kit they have concocted to celebrate this anniversary.

Italy 125th-anniversary kit: the details

Despite the Italians using the nickname “Azzurri”, Adidas has decided to use white as the colour for this kit. The light shade makes for a timeless template, upon which the German marque has created a classy shirt.

Thick, white sleeve cuffs and a round collar give a rather traditional feel to the jersey. Meanwhile, Adidas has opted to accentuate other elements in gold. Their brand stripes roll down the shoulders and along the shorts in this regal shade, plus the Adidas logo is in it, too.

The Italian crest also gets a gold revamp. The outer edge of the shield features the colour, as does the writing and the four stars depicting their World Cup triumphs. Surrounding the base of the FIGC badge is a gold laurel wreath – a commemorative touch for this special jersey.

Lastly, “125° ANNIVERSARIO” appears in gold text beneath the crest, with the years 1898-2023 present, too.

Adidas continues the fabulous white to the shorts, which again boast this special Italy badge marking the occasion. However, the socks contrast the rest of the strip, coming in black.

The 125th-anniversary Italy kit will surely become a stunning collector’s item in the future. The Azzurri themselves will be wearing it soon, though.

Special kit to make UEFA Nations League bow

Italy will debut the commemorative strip during their UEFA Nations League semi-final tie with Spain. On 15 June, Roberto Mancini’s side will take on La Furia Roja in Enschede.

From here, it is not yet clear if the Azzurri will continue to utilise the kit for their next match in the Nations League finals. If they win, Italy advance to a final against the winner of Netherlands v Croatia. But if they lose, then the Italians still have a third-place play-off to negotiate, anyway.

Regardless of this, watching Italy on-pitch in this 125th-anniversary kit will truly be a sight to behold this Thursday.
