Jeff Stelling reveals the football icon he loved annoying on Soccer Saturday… ‘He was an easy target’

EXCLUSIVE: Jeff Stelling really got a laugh out of winding up one of his co-stars on Soccer Saturday.

The broadcaster, who has now entered the next chapter of his legendary career by launching ‘The Jeff Stelling Show’ with OLBG, has reflected on some of his favourite memories from working in football.

Jeff Stelling loved annoying Phil Thompson

Jeff Stelling and the rest of the Soccer Saturday line-up captured the hearts of the nation with their hilarious banter. However, one man who wasn’t quite as able to enjoy the humour was none other than Phil Thompson.

In an exclusive interview with Sporf, Stelling chuckled: “It was always fun going toe-to-toe with ‘Tommo’, because with his passion for Liverpool, it made him an easy target. It’s great that Liverpool played Barnsley in the FA Cup again, because I can remember when they played each other, and Barnsley scored a winner in the 90th minute at Anfield. Tommo was on the panel, and I’m pretty sure that Matt Le Tissier was covering the game, and the joy on his face when Barnsley scored the winner and the pain on Tommo’s face, the contrast was sensational. We all had tears running down our faces with laughter at poor old Tommo because he felt it so much. He was a soft target. On the show, people sometimes thought that we didn’t get on, but he’s one of my very best mates in the world. It was fun. They’re all great guys.”

While Stelling loved cracking jokes at Thompson’s expense, the pair thoroughly enjoyed working together.

And the former defender isn’t the only legend the presenter has had the pleasure of calling a colleague.

Many years ago, the host had the opportunity to welcome George Best onto the show, which gave the Hartlepool United supporter ample chance to get to know one of the greatest players to have ever lived.

In his exclusive interview with Sporf, Stelling revealed what it was really like to work with Best.
