EXCLUSIVE: Jonny Clayton has made an amusing dig at Gerwyn Price.
The Welsh icons have both impressed in the Winmau World Masters, with the pair each winning their opening fixtures before ultimately going head-to-head with one another in a thrilling last-16 showdown, in which ‘The Iceman’ came out on top.
Jonny Clayton says his rugby position gives him the edge over Gerwyn Price
Over the weekend, the darting superstars have lit up the stage at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes, with thrilling performances on the new Blade X board. However, before they ever picked up the arrows, the athletes excelled on the rugby pitch, with Jonny Clayton claiming that the position he played shows he has the edge in intelligence over Gerwyn Price.
When asked if they’ve ever played against each other in rugby during an exclusive interview with Sporf, ‘The Ferret’ chuckled: “We did in New Zealand a few years back. It was only on a rugby field messing about. ‘Gezzy’ played a better standard of rugby than I did. I always say, Gezzy played the hooker and I was the scrum half, so I’m the one with the brains. I don’t know if he’d agree with that, but the scrum half is the brainy rugby player. But honestly, we’re good friends and ex-rugby players. We love the banter, the stage, and everything else.”
Clayton then revealed the one darts player aside from Price he’d love to have in his rugby team.
The 51-year-old claimed: “I’d have to get somebody big like Boris Krčmar. He’d be bigger than the stadium, so we’d definitely take him.”
Jonny Clayton loves his Red Dragon darts
While Clayton lost to Price, he reminded the fans of just how good he is with a magnificent display against Wessel Nijman, in which he dominated 3-1 with his Red Dragon darts.
The ambassador of the business explained: “They’re great companies, Winmau and Red Dragon, especially because I’m Welsh, I live 40 minutes away from them. Every time I go down there, if I have problems with my darts, I speak to Lee; anything else, I speak to the team — they’re always there to help. As we see, there’s the new Blade X in this competition. They’re a good company, simply the best.”
Tom Brown gives fascinating insight into how the Blade X board was made
Both Clayton and Price have revelled in the opportunity to showcase their skills on the Blade X.
Tom Brown, CEO of Nodor Group (the parent company of Winmau), gave a fascinating insight into how the company has gone above and beyond to ensure that the board is made of the finest possible materials.
In an exclusive interview with Sporf, he explained: “We have our production facility in Kenya, where we make our darts and our boards. That’s also the source of the highest-grade sisal in the world. That’s why we put our production there 25 years ago. We only put the highest-grade raw materials into this board. Whether it’s the backboard, the actual sisal itself, or the numbering, everything is the highest quality there is. The quality of the actual 5.5 million fibres that go into the board, that comes directly from the farms there near our factory in Kenya.”
