In the aftermath of France’s defeat to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final, Karim Benzema, has called time on his international career.
While the consensus GOAT, Lionel Messi, finally realised his dream, the reigning Ballon d’Or champion resided himself to the reality that his day in the sun is never going to come.
In recent years, Benzema has solidified his position among the best players to ever lace up to the boots. But his antics away from the pitch have cost him the opportunity to lift the greatest trophy in sport.
In 2018, while his teammates Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba celebrated becoming world champions, Benzema had to take on the role of spectator. His blackmailing scandal surrounding Mathieu Valbuena, meant he couldn’t play for his country for six whole years. And ultimately, it’s this that has cost him from putting the cherry on top of a fantastic career.

Throughout his time for France, the 35-year-old scored an impressive 37 goals in 97 caps. And with his career winding down, he’ll hope to conquer La Liga and the Champions League once more, before finally hanging up the boots for good.
