Kevin de Bruyne made light of the actions of Arsenal fans by posting a tongue-in-cheek Instagram story about them throwing objects at him last night.
After coming off, the Manchester City midfielder had to make his way around the pitch to the dugout. During his walk around the perimeter, fans at the Emirates began launching bottles and drinks at the Belgian.
De Bruyne had to duck a few of the more accurate throws but made it past without a projectile hitting him. Despite this, the actions of some people in the home section made for an unpleasant scene.
As a result, the FA have reportedly launched an investigation into the crowd behaviour at Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Man City on Wednesday night.
Kevin de Bruyne, meanwhile, seemed unbothered by his interaction with the Arsenal faithful. Last night, he took to Instagram to post a sarcastic story.
The first picture shows the City midfielder walking around the Emirates pitch – which he captioned “Beer anyone?”. Then, rather humorously, De Bruyne followed this up with an image of a beer cup being thrown at him from the stands, to which he added a sarcastic, “Thanks!”.
Gunners fans were likely fed up with the opposition star as “KdB” led Man City to a vital win over their title rivals.
Report: Kevin de Bruyne leads Man City to 3-1 victory at Arsenal
Pep Guardiola’s side blew the title race wide open thanks to a 3-1 win at the Emirates on Wednesday night.
Goals from Kevin de Bruyne, Jack Grealish, and Erling Haaland sealed the victory.
Although Arsenal dominated possession throughout proceedings, a handful of errors led to defeat. Firstly, an errant backpass from Takehiro Tomiyasu gifted Man City the lead. Kevin de Bruyne benefitted from the Arsenal defender’s mistake, fantastically lobbing a helpless Aaron Ramsdale with a first-time shot.
The Gunners responded well to going behind, though, and were level just before half-time. Ederson clattered forward Eddie Nketiah as he attempted to make a save, giving Arsenal a penalty. The in-form Bukayo Saka then dispatched the resulting spot kick, making the match even at the break.
Following the interval, Man City thought they had a penalty of their own when Gabriel hauled down Erling Haaland in the box. But, fortuitously for the Brazilian, the striker was offside beforehand.
Gabriel did cause Arsenal to concede for the second time on 72 minutes, though. His errant back pass allowed City to counter quickly before Jack Grealish’s deflected effort beat Aaron Ramsdale.
The visiting side completed the win in the last ten minutes of the game. A De Bruyne cut-back found Erling Haaland, who steered the ball home to score his 26th league goal of the campaign.
Arsenal will be left disappointed that their majority of possession did not translate into shots on target. Meanwhile, this crucial 3-1 victory for City has changed the context of the title race.
How does the top of the Premier League look following City’s win?
The reigning champs have returned to the summit of the Premier league thanks to their win. City are now ahead of Arsenal on goal difference, with both teams on 51 points.
However, the Gunners do still hold a slight advantage. Mikel Arteta’s side have a game in hand. Therefore, they can leapfrog Man City if they win or draw their extra match.
If the two teams continue to match each other’s form, their next encounter could prove a title showdown. City and Arsenal’s game at the Etihad on 26 April should be a cracker – and might even decide who becomes the 2022/23 champions.
