Khabib Nurmagomedov set to walk away from MMA for good

Just two years after his retirement, Khabib Nurmagomedov is planning to step away from his coaching and promoting roles.

Following a huge win over Justin Gaethje, ‘The Eagle’ called time on his career after amassing a stunning record of 29-0. With unmatched grappling prowess, the Dagestani utilised his supreme Sambo skills to dismantle every opponent in his path en route to solidifying himself as one of the greatest fighters of all time.

Unlike most martial artists, Khabib walked away at the peak of his powers. Following the tragic death of his father, he promised his mother that his contest at UFC 254 would be his last. And unlike many athletes who struggle to resist the urge to return, the 34-year-old has stuck to his word.

In the years since his last walk to the octagon, he’s committed himself to his promotional outlet, Eagle FC, and training his protege, Islam Makhachev, who recently defeated Charles Oliveira to claim the lightweight world title.

And now, having achieved everything there is to do in the sport, the legend is ready to commit himself to a new venture.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is done with MMA

With rumours of his future circulating on the grapevine, Khabib took to social media to share a post by za Khabiba. which read: “Khabib is leaving the MMA industry. It about coaching and everything else related to MMA. The reason is Khabib’s desire to devote more time to his family.”

The Russian then posted a follow-up message.

He wrote: “The year certainly turned out to be a very busy and successful. Take care of yourself, brothers. I hope my decision is only for the best, a big hug to you all. Thank you, you were a big reason for my success in sports.”

On February 11, Makhachev defends his belt against Featherweight King, Alexander Volkanovski. But in all likelihood, he’ll have to do it without Khabib in his corner.
