La Liga: Cadiz players and staff given multiple bans for ugly scenes in game vs Getafe

The Spanish Football Federation has dished out 17 matches worth of bans to Cadiz following a bust-up at the end of a chaotic La Liga game against Getafe on 10 March.

With the score at 2-1 to Cadiz deep into added time, a VAR check awarded the visitors, Getafe, a penalty. Enes Unal duly dispatched the spot-kick, meaning that the home side missed out on a vital three points.

Unfortunately, Cadiz let their frustration spill over at the full-time whistle. As Getafe’s Juan Iglesias celebrated the draw, Cadiz defender Iza Carcelen forcefully pushed his opponent’s head. The Getafe player then fell to the ground in apparent pain.

A confrontation between the two sets of players soon followed as CAD fans threw objects down onto the pitch. Meanwhile, Carcelen received a red card for violent conduct.

Both teams eventually managed to make their way off the pitch peacefully. However, the referee noted multiple violations from Cadiz that have resulted in suspensions.

Who has received bans from the Cadiz – Getafe game?

Per Spanish outlet Super Deporte, four Cadiz team members have received bans.

Firstly, a pair of players face a spell on the sidelines. Iza Carcelen – who was sent off in the game – will serve a three-match suspension. His teammate, goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma, got a four-match ban, despite only being booked on Friday night.

In addition, two backroom staff members will be unable to sit on the bench for a while. Goalkeeper coach Lolo Bocardo will miss six matches as he reportedly insulted the referee. Similarly, coach Diego Ribera has a four-match suspension for shoving a match official.

Overall, Cadiz have been given bans totalling 17 matches across the four team members.

As the loss of the players come at a crucial point in the season, the club are not happy. On Wednesday, Cadiz announced that they will appeal the bans received. The La Liga side condemned the ruling as “disproportionate, excessive, and clearly harmful” in a press release.

While the suspensions are damaging, “El Submarino Amarillo” will be more disappointed at losing valuable points in their La Liga relegation battle.

Cadiz 2-2 Getafe: late drama provides stalemate in relegation scrap

Two sides toward the foot of the La Liga table shared a point apiece in a thrilling match on Friday 10 March.

Cadiz took the lead in this relegation crunch match just before half-time. Iza Carcelen’s cross found Ruben Sobrino at the back post, who headed home to make it 1-0.

Getafe responded following the interval but needed VAR intervention before netting an equaliser. After a check for a foul in the box, Enes Unal rifled home a penalty for his seventh goal of 2023.

A tense second half saw Cadiz press on in search of a winner. Ten minutes from time, they also got a chance from the penalty spot. A Domingos Duarte handball gave the hosts a spot-kick, as well as the Getafe defender’s marching orders.

Ruben Alcarez then remained cool to give Cadiz a late lead.

But the drama was not done yet. In the tenth minute of added time, the referee had to consult VAR once more. The video assistants had spotted a handball from Cadiz’s Alfonso Espino, giving the visitors another penalty.

Unal converted once more, meaning Getafe left the Nuevo Mirandilla with a point.

This result leaves Cadiz in 16th; however, they are just a point above the relegation zone. In the danger zone is Getafe, who are 18th. They will be grateful not to lose further ground on their rivals, though.
