Man United aim transfer bid for Celtic right-back in attempt to solve problem area

Man United are looking to bolster their right-back department via the transfer market – and their latest pursuit has seen them turn to Scottish champions Celtic, according to reports.

The Red Devils’ defence has been a problem area for a number of seasons now. As a result, new manager Erik ten Hag has taken steps to try and improve it. Alongside new defensive tactics, such as a high-intensity press from the front, United have brought in reinforcements.

Ten Hag’s first signing as manager was Dutch left-back Tyrell Malacia. Following this, he recruited centre-back Lisandro Martinez from his previous club, Ajax. The Argentine even started United’s Premier League opener against Brighton.

Unfortunately, the adjustments have not taken hold just yet. The Red Devils suffered a 2-1 loss at home to the Seagulls, exposing their defensive frailties once more. In particular, one area that came under scrutiny was the right-back spot.

What are United’s current right-back options?

As it stands, Ten Hag’s leading options are Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Both defenders have their benefits and limitations. Dalot is ideal for joining in on attacks, as the manager likes his full-backs to do. However, the Portuguese international is not the best defensively.

Wan-Bissaka is the complete opposite. He is a better defender than his counterpart but is much more limited on the ball. Because of this, Erik ten Hag selected Dalot for the opening Premier League game. This followed the trend of pre-season, where Dalot appeared to win the battle for the starting spot.

But the boss was clearly not satisfied with what he saw, especially as Brighton’s first goal came from a move down Dalot’s side.

Reports have now emerged of United’s intent to strengthen their right-back area, via Celtic right-back Josip Juranovic.

Man United plot Juranovic transfer

According to the Daily Mail, the Red Devils plan on a swoop for Celtic’s starting right-back. Glasgow Live believe that it would take a fee in the region of £15 million to get Juranovic. However, this figure may increase the later the transfer window progresses.

As ever, United are not alone in their pursuit of the Croatia international. Atletico Madrid have made inquiries, as have Chelsea, per Metro.

Do not worry just yet, though, Celtic fans. Juranovic has started both of the Glasgow side’s Scottish Premiership matches this season – suggesting they have no plans to let him go. Additionally, The Daily Record reports that journalists in Croatia do not expect such a move to happen.

Juranovic started his career in Croatia, playing for his hometown club, NK Dubrava. He then joined Hadjuk Split, playing there for five years before signing with Legia Warsaw.

Juranovic joined Celtic in the summer of 2021, costing £2.5 million. Last season, the right-back made 35 appearances for the Bhoys, scoring five goals and getting two assists.

Sealing a transfer for Juranovic may boost the defensive options available to Man United, but he may not be as cheap as they thought.
