Mark Clattenburg has received backlash for his comments regarding the alleged racist abuse directed towards Vinicius Jr.
The Real Madrid player scored an exceptional goal to give Real Madrid a 1-0 lead against Benfica in their Champions League clash. Following the finish, Vinicius Jr walked off the pitch, claiming a member of the opposite team had aimed a discriminatory piece of verbal abuse in his direction.
Mark Clattenburg slammed for reaction to Vinicius Jr incident
In the aftermath of the incident, the game resumed, with Vinicius Jr returning to the field of play.
As per The Daily Mirror, Mark Clattenburg said the following about the situation: “Words have been said between the players. Vinicius is not happy with what has been said. The referee is following the protocol for an alleged racial comment.
“Once Vinicius has approached the referee, the referee now has to follow the protocol and the rules that UEFA have set out when this happens.
“As a referee, I have had this situation before when players have reported a racial comment on the field of play. All he can do is make the report. Afterwards, UEFA will look into this. As a referee it is very difficult in this situation.”
He also critiqued Vinicius Jr for his celebrations, which some fans have taken issue with.
One individual wrote: “Mark Clattenburg saying that Vinicius Jr hasn’t done himself any favours when he’s getting racially abused. What a joke that man is.”
Another added: Mark Clattenburg should never be allowed to commentate or be employed by another broadcaster again. His comments about Vinicius Jr are disgusting.”

The Vinicius Jr situation certainly isn’t one that any fan wants to see during a game.
However, there are rules to appropriately react to this sort of thing.
