Mikel Arteta has opened up about how Arsenal can overcome Bayer Leverkusen in the second-leg of its Champions League Round of 16 clash with the German side.
Tonight, ‘The Gunners’ travelled to the BayArena, where they emerged with a draw.
Mikel Arteta says Arsenal fans have to help them against Bayer Leverkusen
After a goalless first 45 minutes, Bayer Leverkusen hit the ground running at the start of the second half, with Robert Andrich pouncing on a well-delivered corner to give the home side the lead.
Later in the game, Arsenal secured a penalty, which Kai Havertz calmly converted before making the respectful decision not to celebrate against his old club.
When asked during his post-match interview what was going through his mind when his player stepped up to the spot, Mikel Arteta laughed: “Football has very funny and nice stories as well, and I think it was really impressive, the way he took the penalty. He was composed, and obviously it was a big goal for us.”
Attention then switched to the second leg, which will go down at the Emirates next Tuesday.
In his mind, Arteta believes the supporters will play a vital role in getting his side through to the quarter-finals.
He claimed: “We will have to use the home advantage. The tie is 50/50 at the moment. We have a lot to do, and we’re going to need our people to be at their best.”
