In what could surely be the greatest transfer story of the window so far, Newcastle are reportedly on the verge of signing Santiago Munoz.
And no, it isn’t the striker from the film ‘Goal!’ with (almost) the same name.
It’s an 18-year-old Mexican striker, who currently plies his trade for Liga MX side Santos Laguna.
Much like the film star, Munoz has a dream of playing in Europe, and is set to realise that dream with the Magpies.
ESPN have reported that Newcastle have reached an agreement with Santos to sign the forward, with a full announcement to be made “later”.
Munoz came through the ranks at the Mexican outfit, making his professional debut with the club in October 2020.
He scored his first goal for the club against Club America in February to rescue a 1-1 draw.
After a total of three goals in 19 appearances, Munoz now appears set to make the move to England.
He has also appeared in the Mexican under-17 and under-23 setups, scoring eight goals in 16 appearances for the former.
Munoz was also part of the side that won the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship, but was not selected in the squad for Tokyo 2020.
Journalist Daniel Velasco tweeted: “Santiago Munoz, from Santos Laguna, [will] go to Newcastle – loan for one year with option to purchase.
“He will try his luck in European football, and why not emulate the story of Santiago Munez in the Goal saga?
“The negotiation is in the final stages and it seems a matter of hours before it becomes official.”
In what is already a remarkable Goal-themed coincidence, circle the date of April 30 on your calendars – just in case Munoz steps up and curls a free kick into the top corner against Liverpool.
