Throughout his journey in the professional ranks, the 22-year-old has looked nothing short of sensational, showcasing his incredible flare, en route to bagging 17 goals in 107 appearances.

In the aftermath of Bilbao’s draw against Getafe, a beaming Sancet announced the news to his fans at San Mames.

He said: “I’m happy. This is my home, where I want to be. Athletic is a big draw for players from the Basque Country, and I want to be here. There is no better club to progress as a footballer and as a person,” he said. “The club made a strong commitment to me when I was a youth player, and it is doing so again now with a very ambitious project. I want to repay all the trust placed in me.”

It’s fair to say that the club has a very special place in the attacking midfielder’s heart. He joined Bilbao’s youth academy at just 14 years of age, and now eight years on, the side’s top goalscorer this season is doing his utmost to help his beloved club secure European qualification.

Sancet attributes his development to former-first-team coach Gaizka Garitano, who gave him his first chance in the first team.

The youngster made his official debut in August 2019 in a massive victory over Barcelona – a match remembered for Aritz Aduriz’s awe-inspiring bicycle kick.

In the years since, Sancet has developed into the world-class player that the fans know and love today. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Club President, Jon Uriarte, is thrilled to secure his services for many years to come.

He described the ever-improving footballer as “an example for the talent in our academy and on pitches throughout the Basque Country. Oihan is a standout player. All our footballers are very important, but since making it into the first team, Oihan has shown he has something different. He has no limit.”
