Renowned for his exquisite passing ability, Paul Scholes is undeniably one of the best midfielders of all time, but he had far more to his game than just the role of a mere playmaker. Throughout his career, he utilised his immense power to score some of the best goals of the modern era. So in tribute to the Old Trafford icon, we’re looking back at five of his best finishes.

5) Paul Scholes vs Middlesbrough (2000)
The playmaker marked the new millennium in style with this quality shot at the Riverside Stadium. Gary Neville’s pass to Scholes from 35 yards out didn’t look particularly threatening. But if you gave the magician an inch, he’d take a mile. With incredible precision, he smashed the ball into the top corner.
4) Paul Scholes vs New York Cosmos (2011)
Ok, fair enough, he eventually made a triumphant return the following season, but, his electric finish against an American side featuring Nicky Butt and Patrick Vieira, initially capped off an unbelievable career. In front of an adoring crowd, he produced one of the best goals of his life.
Just eight minutes into his testimonial match, he booted the ball from a mile out to give the crowd one last hit of nostalgia before he rode off into the sunset……until the following year.
3) Paul Scholes vs Bradford (2000)
In a set-piece routine probably practised a million times, David Beckham whipped a corner into his teammate on the edge of the box, who drilled a right-footed volley into the back of the net, sending his adoring fans into raptures.
2) Paul Scholes vs Barcelona (April 2008)
While the legend scored many goals throughout his time as a professional footballer, perhaps none were more important than his thunderbolt against Barcelona. With a place in the final of the Champions League on the line, the Manchester club needed a big moment, and when called upon, Scholes provided the goods.
He picked up a loose clearance, and from 30 yards out, smashed the ball past a helpless Victor Valdes.
1) Paul Scholes vs Aston Villa
In a strike fuelled with incredible power and technique, Scholes scored a goal, so good even the commentator questioned, “how?” After Gavin McCann headed the ball out of the box following a United corner, the Old Trafford icon pounced.
He volleyed the ball so hard it nearly broke through the back of the net.
