Pep Guardiola has cast a shadow of doubt over the possibility of Manchester City signing Harry Kane.
Over the course of the last few weeks, there are two names that have been linked with City more so than any others – Harry Kane and Jack Grealish.
As Villa attempt to keep hold of Grealish, Tottenham are busy preparing for what could be their biggest departure since Gareth Bale left to join Real Madrid.
Kane to the champions on the rocks?
However, during an interview with TV3 as cited by Sky Sports, City boss Guardiola spoke about the difficulty that comes with trying to acquire such a player.
“At the prices (quoted) we are not going to buy any strikers. It is impossible, we cannot afford it,” he said.
“All clubs are struggling financially, we are not an exception. We have Gabriel (Jesus) and Ferran (Torres) who have been incredible in this position.
“We have young players in the academy and we play many times with a false nine. There is more of a chance we aren’t going to buy a striker for next season.”
There’s a good chance this is little more than a ‘move’ from Pep Guardiola but with the start of the new Premier League season fast approaching, it’s definitely worth considering the possibility that Kane could remain in North London.
The Three Lions forward is starting to pick up form as England approach their Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark tonight and if they reach the final, his mind won’t be focused on his club career for at least a few more days yet.
Guardiola, on the other hand, needs to start preparing for what is bound to be another tough domestic and European campaign.
Ironically enough Manchester City’s Premier League defence will get underway on August 15 with a trip to face Tottenham Hotspur.
