Pierce Brosnan and Amir El-Masry were emotional while filming the final scene of Giant
The film, which is out in the UK now, throws the viewers right in the deep end during the thrilling encounter between Prince Naseem Hamed and Kevin Kelley at Madison Square Garden, before rewinding through the British boxing sensation’s rise from the amateurs to becoming a global superstar.
The thrilling journey takes boxing enthusiasts on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, with the movie’s final scene leaving an impact that lasts long after leaving the cinema.
In fact, the dialogue in this exchange between the two actors is so powerful that it’s actually what convinced Amir El-Masry to take on the role.
In an exclusive interview with Sporf, he explained: “That’s what sold it for me, reading that in the script. It honestly brought me to tears. I was like, ‘Yes, this is what we wanted in real life’. [Our director] Rowan Athale manages to marry fiction and reality really well. In a way, we (Pierce and I) were sparring outside of the ring in that scene. It’s a treat for any actor to have dialogue like that.”
Pierce Brosnan added: “It was a poignant moment. I think we were both aware of coming to this particular scene in the movie, which is charged with life, emotion, lament.”
Pierce Brosnan reacts to Dominic Ingle’s comments about his performance
Brendan’s son, Dominic Ingle, who is a fantastic coach in his own right, has publicly expressed his gratitude to Brosnan for perfectly capturing his father’s mannerisms.
And the former James Bond star is understandably thrilled by the trainer’s approval of his performance.
The 72-year-old enthused: “It’s very heartwarming. I was in great trepidation. I fell in love with the script, and then you say ‘Yes,’ and then you have to do the job, you have to make it. How do you do it? You have to control your emotions and calm yourself down, and slowly come to it with an open heart from your own life experience. I met with Dominic and John Ingle. Amir and I went to Sheffield, we went to the gym, and had photographs on that day. They showed us where Dad and Mum lived, Brendan and Alma. Then, they showed us the little garden. They lived across from the church where all of this greatness happened.”
El-Masry added: “It’s funny. Naseem lived opposite his school, which was ten seconds from the gym. That was their life for 20 years. If you want to become a champion or produce champions, you have to live that monk lifestyle of just being in it consistently. We got to live that for a little bit.”
