Everton forward Richarlison had plenty to say to Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher after the Toffees secured their Premier League survival.
On Thursday, Frank Lampard’s side defeated Crystal Palace 3-2 at Goodison Park. The result, therefore, means 18th-placed Leeds cannot overhaul them on the final day of the season.
Although there were scenes of celebration last night for Everton fans, there was also a larger sense of relief. With a squad value of over £400 million (according to Transfermarkt), Blues supporters expected far better from this campaign.
Instead, they have been left fighting relegation until nearly the bitter end of proceedings. Rafael Benitez was sacked by the club in January. His replacement, Lampard, won just six points in his first nine games in charge. Then, when Everton lost 3-2 to relegation rivals Burnley at Turf Moor at the beginning of April, they were in significant trouble.
But the ex-Chelsea midfielder has sparked somewhat of a revival. It began with a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, where Everton were well-organised defensively for much of the game. They could even have snatched something out of the game as well, with Anthony Gordon having chances to score.
Lampard’s side have since won three of their last five games, including Thursday’s 3-2 thriller against Palace.
Everton were 2-0 down at half-time after goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jordan Ayew. However, they sparked into life in the second half. Michael Keane pulled a goal back on 56 minutes, before Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck late to send Goodison Park into raptures.
However, after the celebrations were over, Richarlison jumped on Twitter and fired a jibe at Jamie Carragher.
Why Richarlison hit out on Twitter
During the most recent Merseyside derby, the Brazilian striker was criticised by Jamie Carragher after going down and holding his ankle.
Carragher, who was on commentary for Sky Sports that day, said: “Honestly, get up! Every week I watch him play like that. Get up, carry on. He’s been down three times already. Nothing wrong with him.”
Martin Tyler then added: “He’s spent as much time on the floor as he has standing up in this first half.”
Richarlison has been the subject of criticism in the past for going to the ground too easily. However, replays showed that, on this occasion, he rolled his ankle on the turf whilst trying to stop Thiago.
Everton fans hit out at the commentary after the game had ended. Carragher was then invited onto an Everton Twitter Space to discuss the incident, which he accepted.
On the Sky broadcast, Carragher said: “Maybe looking at the challenge on Richarlison, maybe I was being a little harsh on him. Maybe he just goes over on his ankle.
“But he just goes down so much in the game. He’s gone down twice already in this game where you’re not quite sure he needed to.”
Richarlison fires angry tweet at Jamie Carragher
However, that didn’t stop Richarlison sending Carragher an angry tweet at 2am on Friday.
He said: “@Carra23 – Wash your mouth before you talk about me and Everton, and I don’t respect you.” He then added an emoji at the end of the tweet.
Carragher, to his credit, took the jibe pretty well. He then responded: “I actually quite like this. If Twitter was about when I was a player, I’m sure I would’ve called pundits out quite a lot!!”
We’ve no doubt that there will be plenty of people watching when the pair lock eyes on each other again in the future.
