Rio Ferdinand believes that Paul Pogba should leave Manchester United when his contract expires this summer.
After his move to United back in 2016 for a club-record fee, rumours about Pogba’s future have been almost constant over the last few seasons.
The midfielder has won four trophies during his time at United, with two of those – the World Cup and Nations League titles – having been picked up on international duty with France.
We’ve seen plenty of quality from the Frenchman, who has dazzled Old Trafford with some of his performances. At the start of this season, he provided seven assists in the opening four league fixtures.
However, question marks remain over whether Pogba is fulfilling his potential at United and whether United are getting the best from him. He has played various roles this season, including in central midfield and on the left wing.
His current deal expires at the end of the current season. There’s no indication yet that he will sign a new one.
Ferdinand talks Pogba future
United legend Rio Ferdinand is among those suggesting that he should leave. He has also explained possible reasons for Pogba to want to move on.
On his YouTube show Vibe with FIVE, Ferdinand said: “The reason I wouldn’t commit if I was him is because, well, they haven’t got the best out of me yet. What am I going to waste any more years here for if they’ve not got the best out of me before?”
“Unless someone else comes in, or Ole can show me in these next few months where I’m going to be put in this team, and the team’s going to be set up for me to able to produce my best football.”
“I don’t care who you are… Ronaldo is Ronaldo. He’s on his own. But every other player needs to be put in a system to be able to perform to their best capabilities. That’s it, simple as that. And he hasn’t been put in the best positions and the best place.”
“It’s not all the manager’s fault, trust me. Paul has to take some responsibility as well. That’s a given, but it’s not all Paul.”
If Pogba does decide to leave, he can begin to negotiate pre-contract terms with European clubs from January. There will undoubtedly be several European clubs keeping a keen eye on proceedings.
