Rob Gronkowski calls out The Rock for a WWE tag team match

NFL star Rob Gronkowski has hinted that he is open to a future return to WWE – and has called out The Rock for a tag team match.

The 32-year-old announced his retirement from NFL in 2019, citing difficulties with mental health resulting from pain and injuries. The following year, he signed a contract with WWE.

During his brief spell with the company, Gronkowski extended the list of former NFL players to achieve success within WWE.

The American star was a one-time 24/7 Champion. He pinned Mojo Rawley to win the belt at WrestleMania 36. He helped Rawley win the Andre The Giant Battle Royal at the ‘Show of Shows’ three years earlier.

In June 2020, he lost the belt to R-Truth. By this time, Gronkowski’s contract with WWE had already ended. WrestlingInc reported that had a release clause in his deal that allowed him to return to the NFL. Gronkowski was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he helped them to win Super Bowl LV the following year.

Gronkowski hints at potential WWE return

Almost two years since he left WWE, Gronkowski remains one of the top stars in the NFL. There is no indication that he plans on retiring from the sport for a second time anytime soon.

However, he has hinted that he would be interested in a return to the wrestling industry. The NFL tight end never actually wrestled in a competitive match in WWE, bar his 24/7 success.

Speaking to TMZ Sports, Rob Gronkowski revealed the match type he would want to be a part of – and chose The Rock as one WWE star he would like to be involved.

He explained: “It would definitely be a tag team match, no doubt about that. I just love the tag team aspect of everything.

“It’s my first time, so I wouldn’t want to be on my own doing a one-on-one match. I would be able to get help. Maybe do a one-on-one match after doing a couple of tag team matches. My tag team partner could help me out with some moves.

“Who would it be verse? I’m being put on the spot. It would be pretty cool to have The Rock come back and face The Rock, or have him as my tag team partner. It would be cool to get a People’s Elbow, but it would also be cool to have him on my squad.”
