Roman Abramovich: What is his net worth?

Since his takeover of Chelsea in 2003, Roman Abramovich has become one of football’s most well-known owners.

The takeover was one of the most high-profile in football history. Chelsea went from occasional cup winners to genuine powerhouses on the domestic and continental stages within two years.

In addition, it was the biggest takeover in British football history. Abramovich purchased the club from previous owner Ken Bates in a deal worth around £140 million.

At the time, the Russian said: “In the modern game today, TV rights are what it’s all about.

“Football has been in terrible trouble recently – it’s clocked up huge debts and the transfer market has collapsed.

“I think what this could signal is the arrival of overseas sugar daddies. If this is the start of the super-rich invaders it’ll be very, very interesting to see how the fans react to it.”

A total of 19 years on, it is fair to say that Abramovich’s prediction is largely correct. Most clubs in the top flight are now under foreign ownership. Furthermore, the rise in TV rights has become instrumental to Premier League sides as football grows more and more each year.

In March 2022, Roman Abramovich decided to sell Chelsea Football Club.

He announced his decision in a statement on the club’s official website. Abramovich said the sale was “in the Club’s best interest”, and that any sale will follow “due process”.

The news came amid pressure for Abramovich to be sanctioned by the UK government following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

He is alleged to have strong links to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Abramovich has always denied these allegations.

Lawyers have claimed, as per iNews, that as long as he has a shareholding in Chelsea, it will be considered a UK asset that can be frozen.
