Rory McIlroy Almost Had His Clubs Broken By Masters Star At 2025 Championship

Rory McIlroy has carried his green jacket winning form from the 2025 Masters into this year’s major at Augusta. The Northern Irishman leads the way after an excellent opening round.

McIlroy ended his 11 year championship drought when he secured his first ever green jacket at Augusta, last year. He followed up this success by helping Team Europe secure the Ryder Cup in Bethpage Black, New York.

Now at five under par after a stellar first day in Georgia, McIlroy could be on course for back-to-back green jacket fittings.

It is a run of form that is infuriating some of his fellow players.

Jason Day wanted to sabotage Rory McIlroy at 2025 Masters

One of which, is Jason Day. The Australian may be a close friend of McIlroy’s, but that didn’t stop him wanting to sabotage the 2025 champion’s game ahead of last year’s final round.

However, Day’s desire to destroy his friend’s chances of a maiden Masters title was not born out of spite or anger. But through an acknowledgment of just how great McIlroy’s game is.

Day said at the time, via the Mirror, “[You] can’t do anything. You want to go over there and break every club in his bag, but that’s just not going to work.

“He’s clearly playing some good golf, so you’ve got to do the best job you can. I’ve been on the receiving end of a couple of those where he’s run away with it a little bit, Congressional when I finished second there and he beat me by eight.”

Day is currently tied for third at this year’s Masters, after one round. The 2015 PGA Championship winner sits two shots behind McIlroy on three under par after an impressive opening round.

Day finished as runner up in the 2011 competition but will be hoping he can go one better, finally, 15 years on from his finest showing at Augusta.

McIlroy, meanwhile, will be hoping to emulate Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods as only the fourth golfer to win back-to-back Masters titles at Augusta.
