Sergio Aguero: the top 5 greatest goals of the Man City legend’s career

Sergio Aguero is one of the most prolific strikers of his generation, scoring countless fantastic goals – so, here are his top 5 best.

An Argentine international, Aguero began his career in his home country with Independiente before joining Atletico Madrid. Here, he would establish himself as a fantastic finisher, which drew the attention of Man City.

Aguero moved to the Premier League in July 2011. During a decade-long stint in Manchester, Aguero took English football by storm and won countless trophies. Alongside five Premier League titles, the forward racked up a staggering 184 league goals. Aguero was thus inducted into the League’s Hall of Fame.

Sadly, his football career ended in rather unfortunate circumstances. Shortly after joining Barcelona in 2021, Sergio Aguero had to retire due to a heart condition.

Despite this, he left the game with a legacy as a scorer of bucketloads of goals, including some belters.

#5: vs Chelsea, 2009/10 Champions League group stage

Starting our list of the top 5 goals from Sergio Aguero is a thumping effort from his days at Atletico Madrid. The forward scored 101 goals for the Spanish club, with this Champions League corker right up there with the best.

After Chelsea headed a cross away from their six-yard box, the ball looped in the air toward Aguero. Without hesitating, the Argentine flashed a volley back at the goal, which flew past Petr Cech and into the top corner.

This was the first of two strikes that Aguero scored in this 2009 clash. He also found the net via a brilliant free-kick, which saw Atletico snatch a 2-2 draw against Chelsea.

#4: vs Swansea, 2011/12 Premier League

As Premier League debuts go, they don’t come much better than Sergio Aguero’s first Man City appearance. Coming on as a substitute, he scored twice against Swansea – including an absolute screamer.

City were already 3-0 up as the match entered injury time. After entering the fray, Aguero had tapped in his first goal and set up David Silva for another. But he was not done yet.

Aguero received the ball about 25 yards out, giving himself enough room to try his luck. The ball rocketed through the air, beating the keeper, and nestling in the far side netting.

It was a fantastic way for the talented Argentine to introduce himself to the Eastlands faithful. Also, this sublime strike from Sergio Aguero certainly deserves a place in his top 5 goals.

#3: vs Arsenal, 2017/18 Carabao Cup Final

Man City’s formidable striker won an amazing six League Cups during his time at the club. However, he may remember the 2018 victory most fondly. During that year’s showpiece against Arsenal, Sergio Aguero scored one of his top 5 greatest ever goals.

Strangely, though, the goal came from a very un-City-like long ball. A huge goal kick cleared the whole Arsenal defence, leaving Aguero bearing down on goal.

As the ball bounced in front of him, the City star spotted the onrushing David Ospina in goal. So, he delicately lifted a lob over the keeper’s head which nestled perfectly in the Wembley net.

Aguero’s fabulously composed strike opened the scoring in the 2018 Carabao Cup Final. Man City would ultimately go on to a comfortable 3-0 victory.

#2: vs Chelsea, 2018/19 Premier League

Sergio Aguero loved to score against Chelsea; so much so that Blues fans must hate the sight of him celebrating. Even they must have appreciated the quality of his goal against them in 2019, though.

From Oleksandr Zinchenko’s pass, Aguero sidestepped two Chelsea defenders to open up a shooting opportunity 25 yards out. He then proceeded to unleash an unstoppable strike from his right foot.

The ball whipped through the air until it found its rightful destination in the top-right corner. This effort was Aguero’s first goal in a memorable hat-trick over the London side.

In fact, Pep Guardiola’s men unleashed hell on Chelsea on that day in 2019; they won 6-0, absolutely tearing apart the visitors. That result summed up Man City domestically in 2018/19. They completed a domestic treble that season, sweeping the League Cup, FA Cup, and Premier League.

#1: vs QPR, 2011/12 Premier League

Finally, coming in at number one on the top 5 career goals from Sergio Aguero is, of course, his iconic strike against QPR.

From the narrative to the commentary to the timing, everything about this goal is legendary. You will have seen this play thousands of times before – but we’ll describe it again anyway.

Mario Balotelli’s reaching pass found the onrushing Sergio Aguero. He burst into the box, demonstrating great control as desperate QPR defenders tried to stop him. The Argentine then slammed a shot toward the near post and into the back of the net.

With this, he sent every Man City fan into a frenzy, and wrote himself into Premier League history.

The goal was the winner in a 3-2 victory for the Citizens, meaning they snatched the title from rivals, Man United, right at the death. The goal is such a part of City folklore that their 2021/22 kit even had references to that incredible day as part of the design.

Undoubtedly, this timeless classic from Sergio Aguero is number one in his top 5 greatest goals.
