From horses to attack flamingos, Nick Cassidy and his team talk about some pretty bizarre things on their team radio, but he claims he isn’t speaking in code and is genuinely on the lookout for wild animals on the race track.
Blessed with palpable charisma, the Jaguar star has risen to prominence in Formula E as not only one of the most talented drivers in the competition, but also one of the most popular.
With a gritty determination and unrelenting will to win, the New Zealander is brilliant to watch, especially with the things he comes out with during his races.
Like Sherlock Holmes, many motorsports fans have sat down and scratched their heads, desperately wondering what ‘Backstreet Boys’ or ‘Light a Cigar’ could possibly mean. Alas, with a wry smile on his face, the Kiwi outright refuted the claim that he talks in a secret code.
In an exclusive interview with Sporf at the Mexico City E-Prix, he said: “No code man. It’s cool you’ve been listening in. But I’ve not seen any horses around Mexico, and I’m trying to work out if my team has.”
While most won’t take Cassidy’s claim too seriously, we can only take him at his word.
Nick Cassidy aims to make a splash at the Mexico City E-Prix
Behind his quirky sense of humour is a man who’s solidified his place as one of the greatest drivers in the sport, and is consequently determined to reach his destiny of becoming a Formula E World Champion.
He asserted: “Last year, I had a really good run, and I think the amount of points we scored last year would’ve won the championship this year. I think the field is going to be closer, and it’ll be harder to score so many points in each race. But we’re keeping our fingers crossed.”
The eagerly anticipated 2024 Hankook, Formula E, Mexico City E Prix is available to watch in the UK tonight via TNT Sports.
And Cassidy has one piece of advice for the 40,000 fans in attendance and the millions watching around the world.
He chuckled: “Watch out for the horses.”
