Who will Canelo Alvarez’ next opponent be?

Canelo Alvarez and Eddie Hearn have both said they’d be interested in seeing Canelo square off against Caleb Plant in his next fight.

Alvarez is coming off the back of an emphatic win over Billy Joe Saunders last Saturday night with BJS suffering multiple orbital fractures that led to a stoppage after the eighth round.

Canelo now holds the WBA (Super), WBC and WBO titles at 168 pounds, with the IBF being the only one standing in the way of unified glory for the Mexican.

Caleb Plant next?

That belt is currently held by the aforementioned Plant who has a 21-0 unbeaten pro record, with his latest win coming over Caleb Truax back in January.

As it turns out, both Canelo and Hearn think that’s the natural next step for both fighters.

“That’s my plan, to go for the belt,” Canelo said when asked if he wants Plant next.

“I’m coming my friend.”

Eddie Hearn also wants to see it, but he’s not so sure Plant is invested in the idea.

“It’s the only fight,” said Hearn. “And hopefully Caleb Plant feels the same way. We saw an interview the other day where he didn’t mention too much about Canelo.

“But listen, we want to keep the great fights coming in boxing, the first Mexican undisputed champion at 168 pounds.

“Ultimately, Canelo Alvarez will fight absolutely anybody. We know who he wants to fight, he told me who he wants to fight.

“Caleb Plant. That’s the fight. It’s the must-make fight next.”

Some fans want the GGG trilogy and others think Saunders could get a rematch at some point, but for the time being, Caleb Plant has the attention of Canelo Alvarez – which is an interesting place to be in.

On the one hand it’d lead to a significant payday against arguably the P4P best in the sport, but on the other hand, Alvarez is a nightmare match-up for just about anybody, as he proved once more over the weekend.
