The truth has been revealed after Jeremy Doku ‘disappeared’ during the Real Madrid vs Manchester City Champions League game last night.
No, we don’t mean that in the sense that he ‘went missing’ – for a second, viewers actually saw him disappear.
Manchester City had a humbling night against Real Madrid
While Doku obviously didn’t physically disappear, he and his teammates might have wanted the ground to open up and swallow them at some points.
Fede Valverde’s stunning hat-trick saw the Citizens take a proper tanking, losing 3-0 and leaving their future in the competition looking a lot more uncertain.
It was a tough week for the Premier League in general on the continent, with Liverpool and Chelsea also losing.
Tottenham also got a hammering from Atletico Madrid, but that’s the least of their worries.
Newcastle and Arsenal managed draws, but no wins from six games isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement for the ‘best league in the world’.
Jeremy Doku seemed to disappear into thin air
However, one element of Man City’s play last night that did capture the imagination was Doku’s seeming ability to make himself completely invisible.
Not a bad trick for a winger, if you can control it.
Not that it helped his team…

During the second half of the game, Doku was making his way down towards the byline while being tracked by the game’s star man, Valverde.
The Belgian forward stood the ball up, eventually winning his side a throw-in up the pitch, but very briefly he also seemed to completely glitch out of existence.
“I swear I just saw Jeremy Doku glitch and disappear for a second,” read one comment.
A second said: “Doku just glitched off screen. Are we in a simulation??”
Well, the truth actually lies in the off-pitch technology.

The mystery revealed
The most probably answer is Virtual Replacement Technology.
This sophisticated advertising solution allows for different brands to be advertised in different markets around the world, all digitally swapped in and out around live TV broadcasts.
For example, if you wanted to advertise something that isn’t allowed in all countries – alcohol, gambling, etc – you can still do that in territories where it is allowed, while ensuring that the match is brand safe for those where it is prohibited.
It also means you can sell more advertising, which is another reason they probably like it so much.
But, as Doku went in front of a billboard wearing Manchester City’s green away shirt, he must have momentarily baffled the technology, causing him to appear to disappear – if that makes sense – for a split second.
It’s really that simple.

Real Madrid’s manager Alvaro Arbeloa heaped praise on Valverde
Real Madrid’s players certainly didn’t disappear on Wednesday night, either accidentally or on purpose, as they pulled together one of the performances that the 15-times champions of Europe have become known for.
Every season, you simply can’t write the off until they are totally done.
Alvaro Arbeloa said of Valverde: “He is a player who perfectly represents what Real Madrid is,
“He is one of the leaders and will continue to be for a long time.”
“If the fans feel represented by someone, it is him. The night he had today fills me with pride because he deserves it, and it is a reward for all his sacrifice, for pushing forward when things go wrong, for always being the first, for leading by example, and for leading in the way he does.”
