Ajax have clamped down and refused to let Edson Alvarez make his dream move to Chelsea despite the player’s reported desire to leave the club.
With just hours left of the transfer window, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel desperately wanted to complete one last piece of business. Throughout the summer months, he has kept his eye on the Mexican star and hoped to get the deal done. Chelsea launched an official bid yesterday.
Throughout his time at the Dutch club, the 24-year-old has proven himself as a key cog in the side. He links play beautifully, possesses extremely high-level positional awareness and presents a great deal of mental fortitude. However, it doesn’t look like he’ll be showing off his skill set in the Premier League anytime soon.
Ajax won’t let Edson Alvarez join Chelsea
The Eredivisie champions have already lost Lisandro Martinez and Antony during this year’s window. And by the looks of it, they aren’t willing to lose another big name. According to De Telegraaf, the midfielder was taken aside in the Johan Cruijff ArenA for a chat with technical manager Gerry Hamstra and his right-hand man Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. In this conversation, he was told that a move to England was completely out of the question.
The pair made this decision as the Dutch transfer market has closed. Therefore, losing one of their key players would have a disastrous effect on the team.
This has reportedly left Alvarez furious. He doesn’t believe he has been treated fairly, as other players have had their chance to prove themselves outside of the Dutch league. Furthermore, he fears that an opportunity as big as this one may never present itself again.
However, he hasn’t given up hope and will continue to try and force a move until the transfer window officially reaches its climax.
