Alan Shearer: Top five goals of the Newcastle legend’s career

Alan Shearer is undeniably one of the greatest strikers the Premier League has ever seen, so to honour his career, we’re looking back at his top five goals.

With a Premier League trophy to his name from his time at Blackburn Rovers and a goal-scoring record from his tremendous stint at Newcastle, the sporting sensation walked away from the game having achieved everything he could’ve ever wanted.

Blessed with remarkable pace, a sublime footballing IQ, and an exceptional eye for goal, the English hero managed to hit the back of the net on an astonishing 409 occasions. And now we’re reminiscing over the sweetest of those spectacular finishes.

When it mattered most, Shearer always rose to the occasion. At Euro 1996, the Geordie wore his ‘Three Lions’ badge with honour as he represented his country in a group stage match, in which a win, would secure England’s place in the knock-out stages.

While he struggled to score goals in the build-up to the competition, once the opening ceremony wrapped up, he switched into gear and eventually finished the tournament with the Golden Boot.

And his best goal came when Paul Gascoigne steamed in from the left-hand side, passing the ball to Teddy Sheringham, who placed it perfectly at Shearer’s feet. With magnificent execution, he smashed the ball with maximum velocity, sending it hurtling into the top right corner.

4) Alan Shearer vs Portsmouth – February 2006

On a chilly day in February 2006, Shearer made history, scoring for the 201st time for Newcastle, making him ‘The Magpies’ top goal scorer.

In a crunch collision against Portsmouth, Shay Given lofted the ball to the dynamite forward, who played a beautiful pass to Ameobi, who gracefully backheeled it back to Shearer.

Taking an all-important touch, the Englishman composed himself, before sending it flying past the keeper to write his name into the history books.

3) Alan Shearer vs Aston Villa – November 2001

There are very few men who can claim to have taken on Peter Schmeichel and won but Shearer can.

Noticing one of his ever-audacious runs, Rob Lee picked his teammate out, with the striker bursting through the defence like a knife through butter.

With poise and brilliance, Shearer nailed the ball into the top left corner from the acutest of angles, in a finish that embodied sheer sporting greatness.

2) Alan Shearer vs Wimbledon – April 1996

Before he signed for his boyhood club, Shearer was tearing up the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers. Therefore, it would be rude not to include this absolute screamer.

Retrieving the ball on the edge of the box, the formidable finisher, gave himself an inch of space, before turning towards goal and curling the ball past a static keeper, who couldn’t quite tell what had happened.

1) Alan Shearer vs Everton – December 2002

While the other goals on this list are undeniably epic, Shearer’s moment of magic against ‘The Toffees’ is on another level. On a freezing December evening, the magnificent athlete decided to give his supporters a Christmas treat.

With Everton leading 1-0, Newcastle needed something big, and as the commentators so beautifully said: “What do they say? Cometh the hour, cometh the man!”

After jumping on a header from Shola Ameobi, Shearer unleashed a thunderous volley, that soared past Richard Wright, and sent St James’ Park into raptures. And while Craig Bellamy later scored to give Newcastle the win, it wasn’t the victory the fans were talking about, but Shearer’s scintillating finish.
