Following the announcement that Juan Mata will depart Man United this summer, former team-mate Ander Herrera posted a tribute to his compatriot on social media.
On Thursday, it was announced that Mata’s eight-and-a-half-year stay at Man United was at an end. The Spaniard’s contract expires in June, and he will seek pastures new.
Mata joins Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard in going out of the door at Old Trafford. That is because the pair both had their departures announced on Wednesday.
The summer of change under new boss Erik ten Hag, therefore, has already begun.
The Man United career of Juan Mata
Mata joined the Reds in January 2014 and has played under a handful of different managers at the club. The Spaniard won the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League during his time at United, and became a fan favourite.
The club posted a thank you to Mata alongside his departure to show their appreciation for the midfielder’s dedication during his stay at the club. Mata is a well respected professional, both at Man United and across the globe.
The 34-year-old has seen opportunities limited in recent seasons, after initially lighting up Old Trafford after his 2014 move. In addition, who can forget that bicycle kick against Liverpool?
That goal in the 2-1 win at Anfield, later to become known as ‘Juanfield’, lives long in the memory of supporters.
Herrera’s tribute to Mata
Following Mata’s departure announcement, many of his former team-mates were quick to pay tribute. Amongst them was Ander Herrera, who played with Mata at United.
The Paris-Saint Germain midfielder posted a message on Instagram, which read as follows: “You told me that I was never going to regret signing for United, and you were right. We spent five amazing years together, and now you are leaving as a legend. Still, we have representation of the three amigos @d_degeaofficial I love you both.”
Reds goalkeeper David de Gea is the only member of the ‘three amigos’ remaining at United.
Herrera himself left the club two years ago. The trio of Spaniards had enjoyed a successful time together at Old Trafford. Furthermore, they became pivotal members of the Red Devils’ squad during their spell at the club.
Fans make their own tributes
In addition to Herrera, United fans flocked to show their appreciation for Mata. The love for the Spanish wizard is evident.
