Ashley Williams gives his views on top PL stars in Virgin Bet FIVES series

The former Wales international was asked for his opinions on a number of the division’s top players as part of a new series devised by Virgin Bet.

What is FIVES?

Which five players did Ashley Williams reveal?

Ashley Williams’s FIVES team contains some top Premier League players.

His first player was Brentford striker Ivan Toney. Last weekend, the 25-year-old netted a hat-trick in Brentford’s 3-1 win over Norwich.

Other selections included Chelsea‘s N’Golo Kante, West Ham’s Craig Dawson and Arsenal‘s Granit Xhaka.

But perhaps the standout pick in terms of goals, alongside Toney, was Manchester United‘s Bruno Fernandes.

Williams gives thoughts on “excellent” Bruno Fernandes

Williams was asked for his view of Fernandes, who has been a key performer for Manchester United for much of his time in the Premier League.

In 78 league appearances since joining the Red Devils in 2020, he has scored 36 goals and provided a further 25 assists.

When asked for a comparison to a former United player, Williams gave the name of Eric Cantona, although he suggested it was a “big compliment” to Fernandes.

On the Portuguese midfielder’s talents, Williams explained: “I think he’s obviously very talented. And I think there’s a bit more to come from him. Once he gets used to this situation at Manchester United, maybe gets settled down a little bit.

“They’ve had a bit of a turbulent season on and off the pitch with so much going on. I think for him, he’s been a consistent performer.”

Williams also assessed the impact of Ivan Toney, who has netted nine goals so far in his debut Premier League season.

The Welshman said: “I think he’s done okay. It wasn’t as easy as we all thought it would have been at the start of the season.

“He had an unbelievable season with Brentford last year in the Championship. Very difficult player to play against.”
