Australia’s David Warner hit in the groin by a bail in viral footage

Australia batter David Warner was the victim of an unfortunate incident during his side’s Test match against Sri Lanka when he was smashed in the groin by a bail.

Warner was fielding at first slip when the incident occurred, with Travis Head bowling to Sri Lanka’s Jeffrey Vandersay.

Head, who had already taken two wickets with his off-spin, recorded a third with a beauty of a delivery. The ball pitched outside off, before turning sharply and crashing into the leg stump.

The wicket left Sri Lanka nine wickets down, with one run still needed to set Australia a fourth innings target. However, despite the celebrations of the Australian players, one man wasn’t quite so pleased.

David Warner hit by bail

David Warner, who fields typically at first slip, was occupying the position whilst Head was bowling.

After spotting that the ball was turning sharply, Warner positioned himself to intercept it. But as it hit the stumps, dislodging the bails, the batter suddenly found himself in absolute agony on the ground.

That is because one of the bails, when dislodged, headed straight in Warner’s direction, striking him an unfortunate blow in the groin area.

We shouldn’t really laugh, but seeing the slow-motion replay – and Warner’s immediate reaction – does make for humourous viewing.

His team-mates certainly found it amusing. Marnus Labuschagne tweeted: “How are we feeling, @davidwarner31”, followed by two laughing emojis.

Warner later took to Twitter to write up his own reaction to the incident.

Warner was well enough to bat in Australia’s second innings, and smashed 10 runs off three balls as his side cruised to their five-run target.
