Barcelona fans had the same reaction to Ousmane Dembele contract news

Ousmane Dembele has finally signed a new contract at Barcelona, delighting fans of the Catalan giants.

The Frenchman inked a two-year deal with Barca, which the club announced via a simple video on social media today.

Dembele had a brilliant end to the 2021/22 season as Barcelona recovered well to finish second in La Liga. Under Xavi’s management, the side experienced a resurgence in form – as did Ousmane Dembele.

The winger provided 13 assists in just 21 La Liga appearances in 21/22. Dembele finished top of the assist provider charts in the Spanish top flight as a result. However, despite the upturn in production on the pitch, Dembele had still not renewed a deal with Barca by the end of the season. This prompted speculation of a move to other clubs.

It seemed like the Frenchman’s five-year stay in Barcelona was over, especially after the events of January 2022.

The Ousmane Dembele contract saga

In January, Ousmane Dembele declined a contract renewal from Barca as he did not want a wage reduction at the time. Because of this, Barca then removed him from their squad and said that he must find a new club.

But Xavi was not ready to let Dembele go. Instead, the legendary midfielder brought Dembele back into the first-team fold, calling him an “exemplary professional.” Following this, the 2018 World Cup winner flourished in Xavi’s dynamic attack.

By the end of the season, Premier League teams were circling Dembele, who expected a big-money move. Reports suggested that Chelsea were very interested in the Frenchman, should he become a free agent.

Some outlets also claimed that Liverpool wanted to sign Dembele. However, CBS correspondent Ben Jacobs said that this was untrue and likely a move by Dembele’s agent to try and gain leverage with Barca.

Finally, after a long and drawn-out sequence of events, Ousmane Dembele can focus on his football at Camp Nou for the next two years. According to HITC, the forward will even take a 40% pay cut to stay at the club. Barca fans praised the news, thanking one man in particular for his part in the deal.

Barca fans “thank” Dembele’s agent

Ousmane Dembele’s agent, Moussa Sissoko, did not make the most astute moves in the free agency market. In January, he and his client turned down a deal from Barcelona. Although it would have meant taking a wage cut, it was apparently a better deal than the one that Dembele now has.

Sissoko also failed to find any suitors for Ousmane Dembele that would offer a more lucrative contract this summer, too.

At least this is what the Blaugrana fans think. On Reddit, supporters praised the re-signing but also felt bad for their player.

“His agent royally f****d him,” wrote one user in response to the news.

“What a good deal for Barcelona, but Dembele has to fire his agent for sure,” said another. Clearly, Barca fans believe that their club has got a good deal from a Moussa Sissoko disaster-class.

Meanwhile, some laughed at the loss that the player and agent suffered.

“Ha ha, he lost like potentially 20 million because of his agent. Yeesh, going to be an awkward celebration dinner,” laughed a Redditor.

On Twitter, supporters were similarly ruthless. Barca Spaces provided an update with a stinging critique at the end. “Moussa Sissoko refused to hold a press conference for Ousmane Dembele [per Gerard Moreno]. Probably to avoid the embarrassing questions of how they both failed miserably to get better offers… any offers.”

Ouch. At least Dembele’s future is sorted, where he plays for a manager who believes in him. Hopefully, he can maintain his excellent form from the end of last season.
