Big Mo reveals the secrets to becoming one of the best ring announcers on the planet with incredible tutorial

EXCLUSIVE: Big Mo has a talent for ring announcing like no other, so when the opportunity presented itself to learn the ropes from the MC, we jumped at the chance.

We joined Big Mo at Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions card, headlined by Mikaela Mayer and Chantelle Cameron, where we learned how difficult it truly is to hype up the fans before an epic showdown.

Big Mo shows Sporf how to ring announce

Big Mo was born to captivate audiences. Standing at 6ft7, the American has everyone’s attention before he even opens his mouth.

However, when Big Mo starts speaking, the magic really begins, with spectators stopping their conversations to listen to what the man in the ring has to say.

During a trip to visit an ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist, Big Mo discovered a superpower that changed his life forever. The doctor put a camera down his throat and watched how his oesophagus and vocal cords move. While most vocal cords open and close flush, the Coloradan’s overlap, allowing him to find a guttural growl that has propelled him to the top of his industry, with even Bruce Buffer conceding that he’s the future of the business.

Therefore, when I met Big Mo in Birmingham, I knew it was unlikely I’d match his brilliance, but if I could soak up his words of wisdom, I’d have a decent chance of emerging from the tutorial as a significantly better MC than I was to start with.

Big Mo always likes to dress flash, so it only made sense that I made the effort and sported my best suit. Alas, there was nothing I could’ve done to make up for the enormous height difference. Standing at a generous 5ft10, I was left debating whether the stage name of ‘Little Mo’ might be the most suitable for me.

Regardless, once the tutorial began, I realised how much preparation goes into what the MC does. Big Mo explained the importance of warming up my lungs with breathwork, telling me to inhale to extend my diaphragm out in order to fill my body with oxygen.

Then, we moved on to growls, digging deep in order to find the guttural sound for which he’s been so renowned.

Following the crash course, it was time to watch the superstar in action. Though it was only a rehearsal, Big Mo delivered a powerful performance that left both me and those in attendance in awe.

Next, it was my turn to take my mic. Despite the pressure of having to follow a master of the art, I channelled everything he’d taught me to put on a display that earned the compliments of the man who’d tutored me throughout the afternoon.

However, while I certainly enjoyed the experience, during the event itself, it became evident that I was no match for Big Mo, with the icon lighting up the arena.

Ultimately, the powerhouse has proven his skills beyond doubt, announcing the likes of Mike Tyson, Nate Diaz and Anthony Joshua. And at the age of just 30, remarkably, his biggest nights are still ahead of him.
