Burnley announced midfielder Samuel Bastien as their latest summer signing on Tuesday – with one of the greatest unveiling videos we have ever seen.
New boss Vincent Kompany has rushed to add to his squad this window, as the Clarets prepare for life in the Championship. Scott Twine joined from MK Dons, while Kompany raided former club Manchester City for Taylor Harwood-Bellis and CJ Egan-Riley. Luke McNally also joined from Oxford United.
Bastien, signed from Belgian giants Standard Liege, is Burnley’s fifth summer signing. And, much like the previous four, the club’s media team got creative.
They started relatively tame for the signing of Twine (a dead ringer for Michael Gray from Peaky Blinders). The former MK Dons forward simply filmed a welcome message, before getting straight into the action.
To announce Egan-Riley, Burnley decided to play the popular word game Boggle, forming ‘CJ’ amongst the 16 letters.
The Clarets, meanwhile, replied to a fan asking for a picture of McNally in training to confirm his signing. And for Harwood-Bellis, the club referenced the popular TV show Stranger Things.
But their announcement video for Bastien is undoubtedly the greatest yet.
Burnley use The Rock, Jim Ross, and WWE to announce latest signing
To announce Bastien, Burnley posted a video of a fresh-faced WWE legend. It shows archive footage of The Rock addressing his WWE audience.
A fellow wrestler’s entrance music then hits, and The Rock twists around, shocked, towards the Titantron. Incredibly, Burnley managed to replace the WWE Titantron footage with highlights of Bastien in action for Standard Liege.
Then comes the big reveal. However, Burnley have chosen a clip where the pyrotechnics cover the wrestler’s ring entrance, meaning fans have to wait a few more seconds until the signing arrives in the shot.
The footage then cuts to Bastien, with his face to the camera, rubbing his hands together. Iconic WWE commentator Jim Ross then shouts, “He’s here! He can’t believe it!”
