During a Twitch stream with Gerard Romero, Cesc Fabregas revealed the truth behind the rumours linking him to a sensational Barcelona return.
There aren’t many players who bleed red and blue like the footballing legend. Fabregas is adored at the club, having gone through the ranks in their academy before leaving for Arsenal in 2003.
He captivated fans at the Emirates with his silky performances. But his heart was always set on a return home. And in 2011, his wish was granted. Fabregas moved back to his boyhood club for €29 million.

He provided a significantly undervalued contribution during his second stint at Barca. He scored 42 goals in 151 appearances whilst providing the club with 50 assists. And in 2012, his supreme showings in midfield helped the side win yet another La Liga title.
However, by 2014, despite still being a valued member of the squad, Fabregas asked to leave. He signed for Chelsea and hasn’t returned to the Spanish league since. But that could all be about to change.
Could Cesc Fabregas return to Barcelona?
The grapevine is rife with rumours that the Spanish icon could again put on a ‘Blaugrana’ jersey. And he could be quite an addition to Xavi’s squad.
It’s no secret that Barca are enduring a torrid time due to their financial issues. Therefore they need to secure cheap players who will accept slightly dampened wages. As per Transfermarkt, Fabregas is available for an absolute bargain of £3.15 million. Furthermore, due to his allegiance to the club, he’d likely be willing to accept a pay cut similar to Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
Although he’s no longer at the peak of his powers, the Spaniard isn’t past it yet. There’s no doubt that his former teammate Xavi would be capable of squeezing every last drop out of what he’s got left to offer.
However, during the Twitch stream with Romero, his comments regarding the rumours were more self-deprecating than enthusiastic.
He laughed: “My contract expires at the end of this season, you know. But it’s hard to come back to Barça. Pedri, Gavi, Nico, they are all superior to me now.”
Although his answer was anything but final, he hasn’t entirely shut the door on a mouth-watering Barcelona comeback.
Where is Cesc Fabregas now?
The 34-year-old playmaker signed for Monaco back in 2019. The following year he scored the winning goal in a fixture against PSG to help his club secure their first win against their rivals since 2016. However, he’s only played five games this season and is yet to hit the back of the net. But there’s no doubt that a return to Barcelona would more than light a fire in his belly. We’ll have to wait to find out whether Xavi thinks it’s worth giving the legend one more chance.
