Colby Covington has lashed out at Kamaru Usman for suggesting he has to stay “active” in order to earn another shot at the UFC welterweight title.
Back in December 2019, Usman beat Covington in a five-round war at UFC 245. He was able to successfully retain the title but in the process, he had to endure the toughest test of his career to date.
Kamaru Usman vs Colby Covington 2?
Since that night ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has gone on to beat Jorge Masvidal and Gilbert Burns, whereas ‘Chaos’ knocked off long-time rival Tyron Woodley last September.
Usman is set to defend the title against Masvidal once again at UFC 261 later this month. While many like the match-up, others have questioned whether that’s the right fight to make.
After Usman claimed in a recent interview that he wants to see more activity from Covington to warrant a rematch, Colby was quick to respond on Twitter.
Spoken like a true coward who doesn’t want to face the rightful #1 contender. The rankings have chosen and so have the people Marty. Just say the truth: you know you can’t win and you’d rather fight bums like Street Judas for easy pay checks. @USMAN84kg https://t.co/XtQbs5lnFR

There are plenty of top contenders at welterweight but the title picture beyond Usman/Masvidal 2 looks crowded. Gilbert Burns vs Stephen Thompson is scheduled to take place over the summer and if ‘Wonderboy’ wins, he’ll take a big step towards another title fight. There’s also Leon Edwards vs Nate Diaz at UFC 262, with Edwards being tipped for a showdown against Usman or Masvidal with a win.
With all of that being said, Colby Covington is starting to look like the odd man out.
There are some interesting names out there for him to fight but he seems set on being the next in line for whoever wins at UFC 261.
From a marketing standpoint it makes sense to throw Colby in there because of his name value and his controversial persona. Alas, as we all know, constantly questioning the promotion and the champion on social media doesn’t always work out.
