Deontay Wilder suspended for six months due to injury after Fury bout

Deontay Wilder has been handed a six-month suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission following his defeat to Tyson Fury on Saturday evening due to a broken finger.

The ‘Bronze Bomber’ was knocked out by Fury in round 11 in Las Vegas as he failed to recapture his heavyweight titles.

Wilder was knocked down to the canvas three times during the fight, whilst Fury was knocked down twice during round four.

Trainer Malik Scott said that Wilder had been taken to hospital after the fight with a broken hand.

He told ESNews: “Everything’s cool… he busted his lip, he broke his hand, broke his finger, knuckle, something like that. But life goes on.”

Wilder banned from competing by NSAC due to broken finger

It has now been confirmed that Wilder has indeed suffered a broken finger – and the NSAC have responded by banning him from competing until April 8 unless a doctor clears him to fight.

Wilder’s co-manager, Shelly Finkel, told The Sun that his fighter has broken his right hand behind the third knuckle, and will undergo surgery later this week.

He added: “He has to have surgery, the knuckle is OK, it’s the bone behind the knuckle that broke. He’s sore but everything is OK, he was home yesterday.”

“He’s healing and at this point, if everything is OK after the hand surgery, he’ll probably look to enter the ring mid next year, like April or May.”

If he does undergo successful surgery, attention will soon turn to who Wilder could face next.

One potential opponent could be Anthony Joshua, although that may depend on whether the Brit can defeat Oleksandr Usyk in their heavyweight title rematch, which is expected to be held next spring.

As two of the top heavyweights in boxing, Joshua and Wilder could put on a blockbuster fight – and it would certainly be interesting to see who would come out on top if the bout did happen.
