Despite his talent, Angel Di Maria never excelled at Man United. And perhaps the main reason for that is because he and his wife were never happy in the city.
When the Argentinian joined the club in 2014 for £59.7 million, fans rejoiced. Under Louis Van Gaal‘s guidance, they expected the tricky winger to become a serious force. And initially, that looked likely.
He arrived at Old Trafford with the historic number seven shirt on his back, and began to produce the form that saw him rise to prominence at Real Madrid. Di Maria scored pivotal goals for Man United, and even won the Player of the Month award, in September. However, his showings began to dwindle in quality and, ultimately, he left England after just a single season.
But how did things go so wrong? As per The Express, the player had a turbulent relationship with the boss, which left his confidence in a dark place.
The forward explained: “I was at Manchester, and everything was fine with Van Gaal during the first two months.
“After one fight, things weren’t the same. The relationship wasn’t the same. The fight with Van Gaal occurred because he was always showing me bad and negative things and all that held me back.”
He continued: “One day, I fought with him. I told him I didn’t want to see those things anymore, that I was doing things well and asked him why he wasn’t showing me good things.
“He did not like how I spoke to him, and from there, the whole problem started.”
And now, his wife has come forward to elaborate on her and her husband’s torrid spell in the North West.
The wife of Angel Di Maria opens up on how she hated Manchester
It turns out that the wife of the famous footballer, who now plays for Juventus, had her doubts before they even got on the flight.
In an interview with Argentine TV channel LAM (quotes via Daily Mail), Jorgelina Cardoso said: “Angel came to me one day and said, ‘Look at this proposal from Manchester United’. I didn’t want to go. I told him to go alone. He replied: ‘Let’s go, both of us’.
“It was a lot of money, more than the Spaniards had offered. So, we went. If you work in a company and someone offers you double the salary, you go running.”
She elaborated: “We were friends with Gianinna Maradona, Sergio Aguero’s wife. We travelled to Manchester on vacation for a year. It was always horrible! We came home, and I said, ‘If you’re ever transferred, make sure it’s anywhere in the world but England’.
“I didn’t like it at all… I can tell you. People are all weird. You walk around, and you don’t know if they’re going to kill you.
“The food is disgusting. The women look like porcelain. Angel and I were in Madrid, at the best team in the world. Perfect food, perfect weather, everything was perfect. And then came United’s proposal.
“I told him, ‘No way, no way’. But he kept saying we will be a little more financially secure, and we have to go. We fought about it. We try to be closer when things go wrong.
“I don’t blame him for going there. It was horrible, so horrible. I just told him, ‘Darling, I want to kill myself. It’s night time at two o’clock’.”
