A Dutch fan and several Ukrainian fans shared a wholesome moment during the Euro 2020 group clash between their two sides on Sunday evening.
The Netherlands won a thrilling game 3-2, with Denzel Dumfries scoring what proved to be the winning goal.
Frank De Boer’s side had earlier gone 2-0 up thanks to a smart finish from Georginio Wijnaldum and Wout Weghorst’s 58th-minute goal.
But Ukraine fought back. Andriy Yarmolenko scored undoubtedly the best goal of Euro 2020 so far as his curling effort from the edge of the box nestled into the top corner.
It sparked wild celebrations amongst the Ukrainian fans – and one Dutch fan in particular even went over to a section of the Ukraine support to offer his congratulations.
He gave a thumbs up to one fan, before shaking his hand and embracing the group that surrounded him.
It was a great moment to accompany a superb strike from Yarmolenko.
The goal offered fans a reminder of the immense talent that the West Ham forward possesses. He had a difficult Premier League campaign that saw him fail to find the net in 15 appearances – although he did miss several months through injury.
The 31-year-old will be hoping to record some more strong performances this summer to add to his impressive strike last night to carry into the 2021/22 season.
Four minutes after Yarmolenko’s goal, Ukraine equalised through a bullet header from Roman Yaremchuk.
Unfortunately for Andriy Shevchenko‘s side, however, Dumfries struck in the 85th minute to secure a first major tournament victory since 2014 for the Dutch.
Netherlands are next in action on June 17 when they take on Austria in Amsterdam. Ukraine, meanwhile, face North Macedonia on the same day in Bucharest, with both sides looking for their first points of the tournament.
