Eddie Hearn has hyped up the possibility of a Dillian Whyte vs Tyson Fury fight for the heavyweight title in early 2022.
Whyte, who is coming off the back of a nice win over Alexander Povetkin, was scheduled to lock horns with Otto Wallin this weekend. Unfortunately an injury ensured he wouldn’t be able to compete and now, while it’s still possible that the Wallin fight could be rescheduled, it’s even more likely that Whyte will jump straight into a long-awaited meeting with Tyson Fury next year.
The pair would square off in an all-British heavyweight showdown and as per Hearn, that’s probably the direction they’re going to head in.
“Let’s be honest, he’s waited long enough for this opportunity and what a great fight for world boxing. No-one deserves a shot at the world heavyweight title more than Whyte.
“Coming off his great win against Deontay Wilder, it would be great to see Fury fight back in the UK. I couldn’t think of a more perfect fight. I think it’s the biggest all-British heavyweight fight since Lennox Lewis against Frank Bruno in 1993.
“Fury hasn’t fought in the UK since 2018. With his profile now, following the three Wilder fights, and the popularity of Whyte, that one would fill a stadium for sure.”
What’s the other option for Fury?
If Tyson Fury opts out of a fight with Dillian Whyte then his remaining option would be to meet the winner of the upcoming Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua rematch that has been tentatively scheduled for February.
Alas, as we’ve already come to learn on several occasions, anything can happen in the weird world of boxing.
