Erling Haaland won’t have to spend much time at Manchester City due to an interesting release clause that he consistently places in his contracts.
Following months of rumours, ‘The Cityzens’ have finally secured the services of one of the world’s brightest talents. Haaland captivated Bundesliga audiences with his unbelievable movement and natural eye for goal. With a whopping 85 goals in 88 appearances for BVB, he’s truly cemented his place among the sport’s elite.
But despite his impeccable footballing ability, the Manchester club didn’t exactly have to break the bank. Due to a release clause in his contract with Borussia Dortmund, City only had to fork up £51 million, rising to £85.5 million when agent fees and other add-ons are included. This may sound like a lot of money on paper, but with the Norwegian’s skill considered, it’s an absolute steal.
However, the situation they’ve taken advantage of could eventually bite them.

Erling Haaland release clause history
Although the attacking midfielder showed promise from an early age, it wasn’t until he signed for Molde that he began to show the world how good he could be. At just 16, he scored on his debut to help the side secure a 3-2 victory over Volda TI.
This saw him embark on a serious run of form, and in the 2017-18 season, he finished the campaign as the team’s top goal-scorer. However, taking advantage of a contract clause, Salzburg purchased the player for just £7 million.
And without a glimmer of doubt, he took to the bigger stage like a duck to water. He scored three goals in an Austrian cup game and just couldn’t stop. In just three months, he bagged four hattricks, including one in his Champions League debut against Genk. After scoring goals against Liverpool and Napoli, he really got tongues wagging.
Following a five-year contract agreement, fans expected him to stay at Salzburg. But as is always the case with the sportsman, he had a release clause inserted into his deal. Dortmund snapped him up for a mere £19 million.
Of course, City later took advantage of the exact same situation, the clause pattern repeating. But as per The Mirror, in just two years, sharks like Barcelona and PSG could trigger his latest clause of £128 million. And by the time 2024 rolls around, he could be worth significantly more.
