Rio Ferdinand has expressed doubt over whether rumoured transfer target Eduardo Camavinga is the right signing for Manchester United this summer.
The French midfielder is expected to leave Rennes this summer, with his contract at the Ligue 1 club set to expire next summer.
The Athletic reported back in April that the 18-year-old would not be signing a new contract, leaving him open to potential offers this summer.
Some of Europe’s biggest clubs have linked with signing the France starlet, including United.
Sky Sports reported earlier today that they understood United had held informal talks with Camavinga’s representatives.
Ferdinand, however, has said that he is unsure whether Camavinga is the right signing at the current time, and suggested that he would prefer the club to bring in West Ham and England star Declan Rice over the Frenchman.
Ferdinand on potential Camavinga signing
Speaking on his podcast ‘Vibe with FIVE’, the former United defender explained: “I’ve not seen enough of him if I’m honest.
“I’ve seen a bit of him – his debut against PSG when he got man of the match, unreal.
“Talent? Obviously. Is he going to come in and affect the team right now and become a star, or is he going to come in and be a bit like an Amad?
“Who comes in for £40m but is nowhere near the starting XI? Is that what we need?
“Or do we need someone like Declan Rice, who is flying at the moment? In an England shirt, he’s taken it to new levels now.
“We all knew he was a good player at West Ham but what Declan Rice is doing in the England team right now, for his age, is a madness.”
He later continued: “For me, I’ve got to be honest, [in terms of] footballing ability Camavinga, Rice are fantastic players.
“You can see the potential a mile off. But Rice brings you character.”
